Bush to Beach Kindy Day!

Things got a little sandy at Bush Kindy this week when we traded the trees for the waves!

We had a special guest join us from 2 Bent Rods join us for lessons on fishing as it has been a huge interest in the room for quite a while.

Before attending our fishing class, we completed our morning yarning as a group and connected to the land. We did this by joining together in a large circle and acknowledging country in the sand. It was great to see all of the children being aware and showing respect for the traditional land owners of this land. The children then transitioned to the fishing class which began with learning how to use yabby pumps and exploring different spots in the sand to pump for our very own yabbies that went into our personal bait boxes.

After we had all caught our own yabbies, we moved towards to water, but on our way we saw HUNDREDS of soldier crabs. As the children approached them, the soldier crabs dug themselves into the sand to hide from us. It was very interesting to see how different creatures sense danger and how they react. It was great to see the children being so careful where they were stepping on the sand, ensuring not to harm any of the wildlife below them.

Once we were at the water, the children watched as the instructors pulled their HUGE fishing net through the water to catch anything that may be lurking in the shallow water. When looking through the net after they had finished, we found lots of little fish and a few crabs. It was then that a pelican approached us and we offered the pelican some fish as the children thought he might have been hungry. One of the children in the class wanted to throw the crab for the pelican but the instructor suggested that “pelicans are too clever to eat a crab”. The group replied “let’s see if he is!” Then the instructor threw the crab out to the pelican but the pelican proved that he was too clever and didn’t go for the crab.

To conclude our lesson with 2 Bent Rods we did fishing with rods. Each child got to experience holding the rod and reeling it in. It was great to see everyone getting involved and becoming strong in their problem solving skills when operating the rod.

After we had finished our fishing lesson, we all gathered on the grass for lunch with our friends. It was great to see everyone enjoying their favourite meal (sandwiches) at the beach and building their social skills in a fun and unique context.
